Before the arrival of the Europeans the exact dates about the history of Native Americans is not know; however historians believe that Native American History dates as far back as around 15,000 B.C. to the Paleo-Indian Era when groups of Native American Hunters inhabited areas of North America

Historic ancient rock painting / pictograph art by the Native American Pecos Culture has been found in North American. It can be dated to around 2000 B.C.

The Native Americans lived in North America for thousands of years before European explorers settled in the region. The culture and lifestyle of the Native Americans had remained primitive and had not notably altered before the arrival of the Europeans

Who was the first European to make contact with the Native Americans? Italian explorer Christopher Columbus was the first European to make contact with the Native Americans in 1492. Native Americans are sometimes referred to as Indians or American Indians. This is because when Columbus had first landed in America, he was convinced that he had arrived on islands off the coast of East Asia

The Europeans influenced the ways of the Native Americans and also brought disease! Typhoid, yellow fever, smallpox, measles and influenza became widespread; the Native American population declined from 80 million to less than 1 million in less than 500 years!

Land ownership was an alien concept to Native American culture - they held the belief that the land was a gift from the creator and was free to be used by all for survival and nourishment

Arguments about the ownership of Cherokee land began between the European settlers, the U.S. Army and the Native American Indians. Gradually the disputes resulted in many conflicts

What were "The American Indian Wars"? The American Indian Wars is the collective name that was given to describe the many wars, battles and conflicts between the American settlers, the U.S. army and the Native American Indians. The American Indian Wars took place between the years 1622 - 1924 (intermittently)

The 1830 Removal Act led to the relocation of native Indian populations to Oklahoma. The U.S. government forced tribes from their homes in 1838

What was the Trail of Tears? Definition: Native American Indians were relocated from their homelands in 1838 as a result of the 1830 Indian Removal Act; the name given to this event was the 'The Trail of Tears'

Native American Indians, led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, famously fought and defeated the American Calvary on June 25, 1876. The battle was known as the 'Battle of Little Bighorn' it is also referred to as 'Custer's Last Stand'

Thousands of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors including the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes battled against American forces led by General George Armstrong Custer on June 25-26 1876. The Americans suffered a severe defeat; the battle is commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand

The last battle of the American Indian Wars took place in South Dakota on December 29, 1890. The Wounded Knee Massacre resulted in approximately 200 Native Americans, mainly women and children, killed by the U.S. Army

Charles Curtis became the first person with significant acknowledged Native American ancestry to accomplish becoming vice president of the United States to 31st President of America, Herbert Hoover on March 4, 1929
