Fun Fact 1

The name Nevada originated from the name that Spanish explorers gave to the Mountain ranges of California; Sierra Nevada, which translates to snowy capped range. The name was eventually shortened and officially adopted in 1859

The state flag is blue in color, in the top left corner on a yellow banner are the words "Battle Born"; it gained statehood during the civil war. Below the banner is a 5 pointed silver coloured star, with the word Nevada written below in yellow. Either side are sprigs of the state flower symbol; sagebush

The Capital city of Nevada is Carson City. It is an independent city; its official title is The Consolidated Municipality of Carson City

The area of the State covers 286,367 square kilometers or 110,622 square miles

There are five states that border Nevada they are; California, Utah, Arizona, Oregon and Idaho

The state nickname is "The Silver State" in acknowledgement to the large silver mine industries located in the region

The region is largely made up of desert, and there is very little rainfall, these factors result in a sunny, arid climate - it is the driest state in America. The temperatures vary throughout the region and time of year, the highest recorded summer temperatures was 125°F (52°C), the lowest  -50°F (-46°C), snowfall in the mountains can measure 1.5m deep (nearly 5 ft)

The official State Song is called "Home Means Nevada" it was written by Bertha Raffetto in 1932 and officially adopted the following year

The three largest cities in Nevada are Las Vegas, Reno and Henderson. Did you know, Nevada has more hotel rooms per capita than any other U.S. state? The national average is 1 room per 67 state residents; Nevada's ratio is 1 room per 14 state residents!

A brief history of Nevada - Explored by Europeans, the first settlement was established in 1851; it became a separate territory on March 2, 1861. Nevada became the 36th State to be admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864

Nevada became the 36th state in the union just 8 days before the presidential election on 8 November 1864. Statehood was hastened through to secure the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Nevada's first Territorial Governor was James W. Nye he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, after Abraham Lincoln's Presidential win in 1864 he was elected as Republican to the U.S. Senate
