The state was named after the British island of Jersey, which is situated in the English Channel

The traditional buff or pale yellow, of the state flag represents the color the uniform of the New Jersey Continental regiment. the illustration of the state seal is centrally positioned on the field. The image depicts the goddess of liberty on the left, and the goddess of agriculture, on the right, they are placed either side of a blue shield, illustrating 3 ploughs. Above the shield is a knight's helmet, a horses head and filigree flowers. At the base of the image a blue banner displays the State Motto of New Jersey "Liberty and Prosperity" and the year of statehood, 1776
