Fun Fact 1

The name Oklahoma originate from a combination of two Choctaw  Indian words "ukla" meaning person and "huma" meaning red, consequently "ukla huma" means red person

Fun Fact 2

The state flag is a field of blue with an image centrally placed. The image consists of a Native American (Osage Nation) buffalo-skin battle shield. The shield depicts six brown crosses, the Native American symbols for stars, symbolic of higher purpose. A calumet (peace pipe) crosses the shield in an opposite direction to an olive branch; each symbols of peace in European and Native American cultures. Seven eagle feathers hang from the shield which is believed to represent the seven Cherokee clans. The color of the blue field relates the flag that Choctaw soldiers carried during the Civil War

The area of the State covers 181,195 square kilometers or 69,898 square miles

There are six states that border Oklahoma they are; Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas

The Oklahoma state nickname is "The Sooner State" In the Land Run of 1889 unassigned Lands were presented to new settlers through a succession of horse races - many people arrived early in an attempt to claim the land openings and these people were given the nickname 'Sooners'

The climate throughout the state is generally dry and sunny. Oklahoma City has a humid climate particularly in the summer months, it is also one of the windiest cities in the US, wind speeds can reach an average of 12.3 mph (19.8 km/hr) and is susceptible to frequent and severe tornadoes; it is considered to be one of the most tornado-prone major cities in the world!

The official State Song is called "Oklahoma" it was written by Oscar Hammerstein and the music score was composed by Richard Rodgers. First published in 1943 the song was officially adopted in 1953 and featured in the 1955 film of the same name. "Oklahoma" is unique as it is the only official state song that appears in national musical theatre and film

The three largest cities in Oklahoma are Oklahoma City, Tulsa & Norman

The State Motto is "Labor omnia vincit" the State Motto is Latin, translated it reads "Labor Conquers all things"

A brief history of Oklahoma - First explored by the Spanish and then claimed by the French (1700 - 1803), until the area was purchased by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. The region became settlement to Native Americans during the "Trail of Tears" (1831 -1838). Territories were re-organised (1887 - 1889). Oklahoma became the 46th State to be admitted to the Constitution on November 16, 1907

Is Oklahoma City in Oklahoma? Yes, Oklahoma City is the Capital
City and the largest city in the state, it is centrally located within the state. The state capitol building in Oklahoma City is unique! It is the only state capitol complex in the United States that has active oil rigs!

The US Department of Commerce Census Bureau states that the Population of Oklahoma in 2012 was an estimated 3,814,820. This compares to a population of 790,391 filed on census from the year 1900
