Fun Fact 1

The name Rhode Island originated from Dutch explorer, Adrian Block. He named the Island "Roodt Eylandt" which means Red Island and refers to the red clay that edges the shores

The state flag is a field of white, framed on three sides (top, bottom and right) with the color yellow. In the center 13 yellow stars, representing the original 13 colonies, circle a yellow anchor. The state motto, "Hope" is written in yellow and displayed on a blue banner positioned below the anchor

A brief history of Rhode Island - In 1936 the Island was inhabited by religious exiles that came from Massachusetts. It was granted English recognition by royal charter in 1663 and became the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It became the 13th State to be admitted to the Union on May 29, 1790; it was one of the original 13 colonies of the US

Who is Roger Williams? Roger Williams was the founder of Rhode Island. Born in London England, Roger Williams sailed to Boston arriving February 5, 1631. He was a keen supporter of religious freedom and set up a colony as refuge for religious minorities. He also set up the first Baptist church in America. In 1636 he established a new colony on Rhode Island, which at the time was called Narragansett Bay

The US Department of Commerce Census Bureau states that the Population of Rhode Island in 2012 was an estimated 1,050,292. This compares to a population of 428,556 filed on census from the year 1900
