Fun Fact 1

Until 1861 West Virginia was part of the State of Virginia. The name Virginia originated as a tribute to English Queen Elizabeth I, she was also known as the "Virgin Queen" as she was never married. For more information on the State of Virginia click here

Fun Fact 2

The state flag consists of a field of white surrounded with a blue border, the state coat of arms is displayed centrally. The state coat of arms depicts a framer and a miner either side of a rock that displays the date June 20 1863 (the date the state divided from Virginia and joined the U.S. constitution). In front of the rock lie two rifles and a red cap, also known as the cap of liberty, symbolizing freedom. Below the image is a red banner displaying the state motto, the image is surrounded in a wreath of the state flower. The white of the flag represents purity and the blue border represents the Union - the flag was officially adopted in 1929

The Capital city of West Virginia is Charleston. Charleston is also the largest City in the State

The area of the State covers 62,755 square kilometers or 24,230 square miles

The official State Song is called "West Virginia Hills" it was written by Mrs. Ellen King and set to music by Howard Everett Engle (H. E. Engle) it became the official state song in 1961

The three largest cities in West Virginia are Charleston, Huntington and Parkersburg

The State Motto is "Montani Semper Liberi" translated it reads "Mountaineers are always free"

A brief history of West Virginia - West Virginia was part of Virginia territory until the region refused to endorse the ordinance of secession. The Wheeling Convention took place in 1861, the meeting reorganised the territories and consequently split them in two territories. West Virginia became the 35th State to be admitted to the Union, on June 20, 1863

West Virginia is famous for its fabulous mountains including the Appalachian Mountains and Spruce Knob in Pendleton County, the highest point in the state, measuring a height of 1,482m (4,863 ft). The mountainous landscape is a popular tourist destination for both climbers and caversí whishing to explore the diverse and interesting landscape

The New River Gorge is one of the oldest rivers in America. The River itself stretches a distance of 85 km (53 miles); the New River Gorge is also a popular destination for rock climbers as there are over 1,400 established climbs ranging in heights from 9 - 37m (30 - 120 feet)

The US Department of Commerce Census Bureau states that the Population of West Virginia in 2012 was an estimated 1,855,413. This compares to a population of 958,800 filed on census from the year 1900
