Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born at Hyde Park, New York on January 30, 1882

Fun Fact 2

Franklin was the only child of James and Sara Roosevelt, they were a wealthy family from New England. He was a distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a good education, at the age of 14 he attended the Groton School, a prominent  school in Massachusetts, in 1903 he graduated from Harvard College, he then attended Columbia Law School

On March 17, 1905, Franklin D Roosevelt married his sweetheart Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, who preferred to be addressed with her middle name rather than her first. Together they had six children

In August 1921, when he was 39 years of age Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered a paralytic illness, likely to be polio, which left him with paralyzed legs

During the 1920s Franklin D. Roosevelt invested large amounts of his personal wealth developing a spa in Warm Springs to complement the treatment of his paralysis. Some years later, in 1932, he built a home there which he named the 'Little White House'

In 1933, when he was 51 years of age, Franklin D Roosevelt became the 32nd president of America.  He was the only president to be elected to serve for four terms and the only president who used wheelchair, although with demanding exercise and determination he learnt how to stand for a short time with leg braces

The US joined the Second World War in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese.  During the war president Franklin D. Roosevelt served as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces

Franklin D. Roosevelt, will be remembered as the US president that guided America through some of the toughest crisis, including the great depression, the second world war and he made New Deal policies that brought about the start of a national recovery

In February 1945 Franklin Roosevelt played a key role in the Yalta conference, also known as the Crimea Conference. He met with heads of States from the United Kingdon, Winston Churchill, and and the Soviet Union, General Secretary Joseph Stalin, to discuss the final phase of World War II and agree on the reorganization of post-war Europe

Franklin D. Roosevelt's nickname was simply his initials “FDR”. He was the first president to have his own airplane

During the British Royal Visit, in June1939, Franklin Roosevelt presented Queen Elizabeth and King  George VI with a picnic and gave them hot dogs

Franklin D Roosevelt died aged 63 and during his 4th term as president, the date was April 12, 1945 and he was at his home, the Little White House, in Warm Springs, Georgia
