Fun Fact 1

Harry S Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884

Fun Fact 2

He was the eldest of three children, the family moved several times when he was young and Harry did go to a  traditional school until he was 8 years of age

Fun Fact 3

His name was chosen after his mother's brother, who's name was Harrison "Harry" Young. The "S" did not stand for any name but was a compromise between the names of his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young

He studied at the University of Kansas City Law School, and had anticipated attending West Point Military Academy, but because of his poor eyesight he was not permitted. Harry Truman was a talented piano player and a one time thought about a career in music but he decided on politics instead

Despite not attending West Point Military Academy, he did serve in the military, he became captain of an artillery unit during World War I

On June 28, 1919, Harry Truman married his sweetheart Elizabeth Virginia Wallace (Bess). They met at Sunday school when Harry was six years old, and began dating during High school. They had a daughter together in 1924 and called her Mary Margaret

In 1945, when Harry Truman was 60 years of age, he became the 33rd president of America, he served for 8 years until 1953

The Second World War was taking place during the presidency of Harry S Truman, and he made the authoritative decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan on August 6 and 9, 1945. This marked a victorious end of the World War II

Between 1945 - 1991, a political opposition occurred between between the Western World, led by the United States, and the communist countries of Eastern Europe, led by the Soviet Union. Although officially war was not declared, this period was called the Cold War. The Truman Doctrine was a policy complied by Harry Truman in 1947 that assured that the US would give support to countries threatened by Soviet forces or communist insurrection. The Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991

The Korean war was fought towards the end of Harry Truman's second term in office. It lasted from 1950 to 1953 and the conflicts were bloody disputes over borders between North Korea and South Korea. 5,720,000 US troops were engaged in battle and 33,741 of those died during combat

On November 1, 1950 Harry Truman was subjected to an assassination attempt by two Puerto Rican Nationalists. Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola forced their way into Blair House, where Truman was living at the time, a White House guard was killed during the assassination attempt and two others were left wounded, Harry Truman was not harmed

Harry Truman was know by more than one nickname. He loved to wear brightly colored shirts and bow-ties and once once voted one of the top ten best dressed congress men, for this reason he was given the nickname "Haberdasher Harry". He was considered well amongst the community and well known for his integrity, honesty, and efficiency. One of his most famous quote was "The buck stops here", and for this and his no-nonsense attitude he was given the nickname "Give ’Em Hell Harry"

On boxing day December 26, 1972 Harry S Truman died in Kansas City, Missouri, he was 88 years of age

Fun Fact 14

The body of Harry S Truman was laid in state at the Truman Library, Kansas City, Missouri, and he was buried in the courtyard of the presidential Museum. His beloved wife Bess was buried at the side of him ten years later, in 1982

Harry S Truman said many famous quotes, including "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog." And "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."
