What is earth day? Earth day is the nominated day that people come together to share appreciation for our planet and environment, it is a time to consider pollution, conservation and preservation and take actions to improve

When is earth day? Most people celebrate on April 22, although a few countries celebrate the day around March 20th; the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere (called the Vernal Equinox)

When was the first earth day? The first official earth day was on April 22, 1970. Over 20 million Americans joined together for environmental conventions and demonstrations

The creation of earth day: earth day was formed by three key people, peace activist John McConnell, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson and chief organizer Denis Hayes who was a student from Harvard University, Massachusetts

John McConnell first proposed a holiday to celebrate Earth's splendour and to encourage advancement of peace in October 1969 at the UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. John McConnell created the Earth Day Proclamation, the proposal was accepted by the United Nations, and an international Earth Day was officially declared on February 26 1971

U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin proposed the bill to U.S. Congress to officially designate April 22nd as Earth Day. He was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 in recognition for his role in founding Earth day and raising awareness to environmental issues

The Earth Day Proclamation declares principles and responsibilities to help conserve our planet. It has been signed by international dignitaries including: world leaders, ambassadors, senators, presidents and organization representatives including Friends of the Earth and the United Nations

Earth day has more recently raised important messages about the issues of recycling and global warming; over 5,000 world wide environmental groups actively take part to spread the message and raise awareness of conservation and world preservation

Earth Day is celebrated in many cities around the world by the ringing of peace bells. The United Nation Peace Bell has been rung annually on the first day of spring (the Vernal Equinox) since 1971. Peace bells also ring in Vienna, Geneva and Berlin

The Earth Day Flag is dark blue displaying a photo of Earth taken by NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration). It was designed and created by John McConnell

The first Earth Day was celebrated by over 20 million people in the U.S. That figure has grown over the years; it is estimated that more than a billion people celebrate earth day in 180 countries across the globe!

What can we do to preserve our planet? There are various ways we can all help; if everybody did their best it could make a huge difference to our planet. We need to be more energy wise and more energy efficient at home and school. We should all recycle as much as possible and make sure lights and taps are turned off properly to conserve energy and water

Earth hour was set up to raise awareness on climate change; it encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, at the same time on the same day; symbolizing universal awareness, support and the need to take action on environmental issues.

The Earth Hour event was created by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature); the first event took place in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. It is a global event that takes place in March each year
