What is Recycling? Recycling is the process that sorts, processes and changes unwanted waste materials into new products

What can I recycle? Recyclable materials include; glass, paper, metal, plastic, fabrics and electronics. Food and garden waste can be recycled as it is biodegradable, however it is not generally considered true recycling

Fun Fact 3It has been estimated that the average American uses seven trees a year in tree products including paper and wood, environmental experts estimate that an area the size of two football fields was being destroyed from the rainforests every second!

Recycling one tonne (2204 lb) of paper saves 17 tress, 6,000 gallons of water and produces 73% less air pollution than if it were made from raw materials

Why should we recycle? There are many reasons that we should all recycle including; to cut back on the use of new raw materials, to reduce excessive energy use, to prevent waste of potentially dangerous materials, to reduce harmful air and water pollution and to lower gas emissions

Why is recycling good? Recycling is good as it saves energy consumption and conserves the environment

The metal aluminum from drinking cans, bikes, computers, cars, planes and other sources can be recycled into new; recycling old aluminum uses only 5% of the energy needed than making new from raw materials

Recycling a single aluminum can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours, or run a 100watt light bulb for four hours

If garbage is not recycled it may go into landfill. Landfill garbage rots and can produce a dangerous greenhouse gas called methane. Recycling is a great way to fight against global warming

There are three main systems to collect garbage to enable sorting for recycling; curb-side or house collection, drop-off centres or buy-back centres (i.e. scrap metal). Dry garbage is sorted out at a materials recovery facility (MRF)
