The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It covers approximately 5,500,000 square kilometers of land and makes up more than 50% of the world's remaining rainforests.

Fun Fact 2

The Amazon Rainforest is a moist broadleaf forest located in South America. It covers the majority of the Amazon Basin and is present in nine different nations including Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

The Amazon Rainforest is classed as a tropical rainforest as it receives high average temperatures and high average rainfall. The climate in tropical forests is typically warm and wet.

The Amazon Rainforest receives a warm, wet climate as it is situated within a belt around the equator. The weather conditions in the rainforest create a rich ecosystem in which animal and plant life is able to exist in abundance.

It is thought that human life has existed within the Amazon Rainforest for many years. Archaeological evidence suggests that human life began in the forest approximately 11,200 years ago.

The Amazon River runs through the rainforest. This is the largest river by discharge of water in the world. The Amazon Basin is drained by the river. The Drainage Basin covers a huge area of approximately 40% of the continent of South America.

The Amazon Rainforest is full of plant and animal life. There are more species of plant and animal life in this forest than any other forest in the world. It has the largest community of living animals and plants across the globe. More than half of the plant and animal species found on earth can be found within this tropical forest.

There are some dangerous animal species living in the Amazon Rainforest which can pose a real threat, such species include the jaguar, cougar, black caiman, anaconda and vampire bat. Also, the river contains some very dangerous species including the electric eel and piranha.

The Amazon Rainforest is under threat from human activity. Unfortunately, the world's forests are fast disappearing as humans chop down trees for timber, paper and to make space for farms, buildings and roads.

The Amazon Rainforest was formed over millions of years. As deforestation continues, animal habitats are being destroyed and the trees are not been replaced in the same manner. Even when new trees are planted, they still take many years to grow.

The rainforests are vital to our planet. They are often referred to as 'the lungs of the earth' because the trees and plant species help to cleanse our atmosphere and provide oxygen which is a necessity to all living things on earths.

The Amazon Rainforest is structured in layers. There are four main layers within its structure which are called the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent.

Plant and animal life exists in all layers of the forest; many animals build their habitats within the forest floor layer where they can hide from predators underneath soil and leaves. The higher layers provide more sunlight and access to more water, these layers are ideal for plant life as they provide the sources needed for growth and development.

The types of trees and plants found within the Amazon Rainforest include the Bengal Bamboo, Strangler Figs, Kapok Tree, Durian, Orchids, Bougainvillea, Bromeliads, Ferns, Venus Fly Trap, Mosses, Curcare, Jambu, Coconut Tree, Tualang and Mangrove Fores.

Fun Fact 15

The trees within this particular type of forest can grow very tall, the most dominant type of trees grow to approximately thirty to forty-five meters high! These species of trees form the canopy layer of the rainforest. There are some tree species which grow even higher, towering over the canopy at heights of around forty-five to fifty-five meters!
