Fun Fact 1

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is situated in Cathedral Square in the town of Pisa, Italy. Many tourists visit every year to view this remarkable building which is architecturally fine.

In Italian, the name of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is 'La Torre di Pisa'.

Fun Fact 3

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was built as a bell tower for the cathedral; a building which would stand alone, separately to the main building of the cathedral.

Construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began many years ago but was not completed straight away due to problems with the position of the structure which quickly became apparent. The total construction was built over two centuries.

The poor foundations were dug in 1173. We say poor as the foundations were dug into unstable soil at less than three meters deep!

The Leaning Tower of Pisa was constructed to the third floor by which time, the tower had begun leaning to one side. This tilt could become a danger if building work continued.

The first floor of the Leaning Tower of Pisa was constructed in a blind arcade style which consisted of a number of arches with columns that made up the outer wall.

Nearly 100 years later, building work continued again. This time by an architect called Giovanni di Simone who continued to build on top of the original tower rather than starting over again. To compensate the tilt of the building, Giovanni di Simone made the floors slightly higher on one side. By 1319, the building was complete to the 7th floor. The bell tower had not been constructed by this stage.

An architect called Tommaso di Pisano constructed the bell tower in 1372. Again, to counteract the tilt, the crowning chamber was built higher on one side.

Have you ever wondered how far the Leaning Tower of Pisa tilts? Currently it tilts to the southeast at 3.99 degrees. The roof of the building stands at 3.9 meters from the vertical.

The height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, on its highest side, is approximately 57 meters.

The diameter of the base of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is approximately 15.5 meters.

Fun Fact 13

The tilt has increased over the years, raising concerns over the possible dangers of the building. In 1990, to prevent the construction from toppling, soil was removed from the ground beneath the raised side and the 3rd floor of the tower was attached to supporting cables. The Leaning Tower of Pisa was pulled back into its original position.

Fun Fact 14

In 2008, the foundations were strengthened and the tower has stood still since. Hopefully, this fantastic wonder will remain safe for centuries to come.
