The Parícutin Volcano is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World located in the state of Michoacán in Mexico.

The Parícutin is a cinder cone volcano which means it is a steep conical hill of volcanic debris.

The Parícutin Volcano is very special because humans have witnessed its activity from start to finish - when the volcano first emerged to its extinction.

The Parícutin Volcano is part of the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire can be described as an area of earthquake and high volcanic activity which occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

The deep sound of earthquakes could be heard for approximately three weeks leading up to the eruption of the Parícutin Volcano in 1943.

The Parícutin Volcano developed very quickly. It began as a small eruption of ash and stones, and quickly developed into an eruption the size of five stories in just one week.

Within a year, the Parícutin Volcano had grown so much it reached around 336 meters, so much so that the surrounding areas became covered by its lava and people had to relocate their homes to different areas, further away from the eruption.

The Parícutin Volcano continued to erupt for approximately eight years. During this time, its lava managed to cover areas within 9.7 square miles.

The eruptions eventually came to an end in 1952 and the Paricutin volcano has remained silent ever since.

This type of volcano is known as a cinder cone or monogenetic volcano. Typically, these types of volcanoes never reoccur again after their final eruptions.

The final height achieved by the Parícutin Volcano was approximately 424 meters.

The Parícutin Volcano began as a small eruption in a cornfield. The first people to witness its eruptions were Dionisio Pulido and his wife in February 1943.
