The State name originates from a local Native Indian word that means "big hill place". The correct, official, name for the state is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Fun Fact 2

The state flag is a field of white which centrally depicts a coat of arms. The state coat of arms consists of a blue shield, displaying a Native American, holding a bow and arrow; the arrow points down symbolizing peace. The upper left corner of the shield contains a white star, representing Massachusetts. Above the shield is the military crest, signifying the victory of liberty that was won through the battles of revolutionary war. Below the shield is a blue ribbon which displays the motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty)

The 1770 Boston Massacre and the 1773 Boston Tea Party were key events towards the revolt towards independence; they led to the beginning of the American Revolution. The British lost control of the region in 1776, Massachusetts became the 6th State to be admitted to the Union on February 6, 1788
