Fun Fact 1

The name Ohio originated from the Iroquois Indian word meaning "beautiful river"

Fun Fact 2

The state flag of Ohio is unique; it is the only state flag that is not rectangle in shape. The flag is made up of the national colours. Five red and white stripes signify Ohio as being one of the five states that comprised the Northwest Territory; the stripes also represent state roads and waterways. A blue triangle represents the hills and valleys, the triangle contains 17 white stars, 13 stars are positioned to the left representing the original colonies of the US with the addition of the 4 stars on the right 17 stars signify that it became the 17th state admitted to the union. The white circle with a red center is the letter "O" the image also symbolises the nickname "the Buckeye State"

A brief history of Ohio - The region was first explored by the French in 1669. The French and British fought to take control of the region. The area was finally ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Paris in 1783, and became its own territory in 1799. Ohio became the 17th State to be admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803

Ohio's State Bird is the Northern Cardinal (C. cardinalis) it was officially adopted by the state in 1933 - the Cardinal is also the official state bird of seven other US States. Originally they were rarely found within the state as the geography was largely forest, as the habitat changed the population thrived and cardinals can now be found in every county in the state

The Ohio & Erie Canal way was built in the 1820s and 1830s; it proved to be an invaluable link to New York and New Orleans creating jobs, trade and transportations which significantly fuelled the growth of industry and the economy. Today the canals are protected as a national heritage area, more than more than 2.5 million annual tourists travel the 177 Km (110 miles) of towpaths, where once mules pulled canal boats loaded with passengers and merchandise

The US Department of Commerce Census Bureau states that the Population of Ohio in 2012 was an estimated 11,544,225. This compares to a population of 4,157,545 filed on census from the year 1900
