Fun Fact 1

The state name was specified to Pennsylvania Founder William Penn by English King, Charles II. The name is a combination of the founders surname "Penn" and the Latin word "Sylvania" which means woodland

Fun Fact 2

The state flag is a field of blue with the state coat of arms centrally located. The coat of arms features a shield depicting the following images; a ship - representing commerce, a plough - representing resources and agriculture, and three sheaves of wheat - representing fertile land. The Shield is protected by two black horses and an American bald eagle. Positioned below the shield are olive branches and cornstalks - which represent peace and prosperity. The state motto is displayed on a red banner at the base of the design

A brief history of Pennsylvania; the region was originally established by Swedish colony in 1638. Conflict over possession took place between the British, Dutch and French until February 28, 1681 when King Charles II granted a land charter to William Penn.  The Mason-Dixon Line established the regions southern boundaries, this was extended westward in 1784. Pennsylvania became the 2nd State to be admitted to the Union on December 12, 1787 - less than a week after the first state (Delaware) had ratified

The Pennsylvania Colony was one of the original 13 colonies. The original 13 colonies were divided into three geographic areas; New England, Middle and Southern colonies. The Pennsylvania Colony was one of the Middle Colonies, and the location for the first two Continental Congresses, (meetings of representatives that went on to become the governing body during the American Revolution) the meetings produced the Declaration of Independence and the onset of the American Revolution
