Fun Fact 1

Dwight David Eisenhower was born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890

Fun Fact 2

Dwight D. Eisenhower came from German descent and was one of seven sons growing up in a poor family living. All of the boys were nicknamed various forms of "Ike", such as "Big Ike" and "Little Ike", "Ike" originated as an abbreviation of their last name. In later life only Dwight was still called "Ike" and it was famously used in his presidential campaign with the slogan "I like Ike"

Despite his poor background Dwight D. Eisenhower had a good education and attended West Point Military Academy, the class he was in was later referred to as "the class the stars fell on", that was because of the 164 students in the class, 59 achieved the rank of brigadier general or higher, 3 rose to become full general and 2  members of the class rose to the rank of general of the army. Dwight D. Eisenhower achieved the position of supreme commander during Operation Overlord during the Battle of Normandy, France in June 1944

On July 1, 1916, Dwight D Eisenhower married Mary “Mamie” Geneva Doud. He had met her at an Army base in October 1915, proposed to her on Valentine's Day, and they wed 5 months later. They had two boys named John and Doud, sadly Doud died when he was 3 years of age

In 1953 Dwight D Eisenhower became the 34th President of America, he was 62 years of age and served for 8 years until 1961

Dwight Eisenhower was the only US President who served in both World War I and World War II and the first president who was also a qualified licensed pilot

Fun Fact 7Dwight D Eisenhower played a key role in the closing stages of the Korean War which ended in 1953, the same year that he became president

In 1957 the Little Rock Crisis took place, nine African-American students were prevented from entering the racially segregated Little Rock school by the Governor of Arkansas. Dwight D Eisenhower intervened with federal troops, his enforced actions are considered to be a significant event in the African-American Civil Rights Movement

The Eisenhower Doctrine was a speech made by the president on 5 January 1957; it was approved by congress the same year. It stated that at request American would give economic assistance and aid from U.S. military forces if it was at risk of armed aggression from another state

The late 1950s was the start of the space race, and on October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, which was the first man-made satellite, as it was during the time of the cold war Dwight D Eisenhower was criticized for letting the Russians get there before the US. Two years later in 1958, Dwight D Eisenhower's asked congress to establish NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

Alaska became the 49th state of America on Jan 3, 1959, and Hawaii became the 50th on Aug 21 of the same year. Dwight D Eisenhower was the first president of all 50 states of America

At the time of Dwight D Eisenhower's retirement he was the oldest man to be president; however he was not a well man. He had been in hospital suffering from multiple heart attacks, the last words he spoke were "I want to go; God take me"

On March 28, 1969 Dwight D Eisenhower died in Washington D.C. He was 78 years of age

Fun Fact 14

The state funeral of Dwight D Eisenhower was held at two days after his death at Abilene, Kansas. He was buried alongside his son Doud, who died in 1921 when he was just three years old

On Jan 9, 1959 Dwight D. Eisenhower was quoted as saying "America is best described by one word, freedom."
