Herbert Hoover was born in West Branch, Iowa on August 10, 1874

Fun Fact 2

The parents of Herbert Hoover died when he was very young, he  along with his brother and sister were bought up in Oregon by their uncle, Dr. John Minthorn

He studied at the Stanford University in California, which had just been established, he majored in geology and graduated in 1895

Fun Fact 4

On February 10, 1899 he married Lou Henry Hoover, they met at Sanford and moved to China and were there during the during the 'Boxer Rebellion' of 1900. Lou was fluent in several languages, and the couple spoke together in Chinese when they wanted to keep conversations private

In 1929, when he was 54 years of age Herbert Hoover became the 31st President of America. He served for 4 years until 1933

Herbert Hoover was a self made millionaire by time he was forty, earning his money from engineering, owning silver mines and from writing books on mining engineering. For this reason he did not take a salary as president, he donated it to charity. He was the first millionaire president!

As Herbert Hoover was a Quaker, he affirmed his presidency rather than taking oath of office

17,000 veterans of World War I  and 43,000 supporters protested during the spring and summer of 1932  what was called 'The Bonus Army March'. The marchers demanded payment of service certificates given to them by government. General Douglas MacArthur was called in to conduct order and his harsh treatment added to the negative opinions of Herbert Hoover

Due to the 'Great Depression' and the 'Bonus Army March' Herbert Hoover became unpopular, many giving blame of the financial situation to him. In the election of 1929, he won 40 states, but in the re-election of 1932 won the vote of just 6

In 1931, Herbert Hoover gave the approval for the US national anthem the "Star-Spangled Banner"

On October 20, 1964 Herbert Hoover died in his suite at Waldorf Towers New York. He was one of four US presidents to reach the age of 90 years old

The body of Herbert Hoover was laid in state in the rotunda of the State Capitol, it was finally laid to rest at his birthplace in West Branch, Iowa

Herbert Hoover  was once quoted as saying "Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt."
