Fun Fact 1

There are more than 20,000 different species of fish worldwide. The smallest is the Asian miniature transparent Paedocypris, which measures less than 8mm long, the largest is the whale shark which can measure up to 13 meters long

The majority of fish specifically live in either a saltwater or freshwater environment however, some species are able to move from one environment to the other

Different types of fish include Tropical, Saltwater, Aquarium, Marine, Pond and Pet fish

Fish have different diets depending on the species and environment; they may be carnivorous (meat eating), herbivorous (plant eating), or omnivorous (eats a variety of meat and plants)

All species of fish are vertebrates, which means they have a backbone

Fins are used for directing, stabilizing, or propelling them through the water

Fish have up to seven fins; the number varies depending on the species. The different fins are called; dorsal (back), ventral (pelvic), caudal (tail), anal (bottom), pectoral (breast), adipose (behind dorsal) and cephalic (horns)

Most fish breathe through gills, however some types have lungs and breathe air

Gills are thin sheets of tissue that contain blood vessels. As the water passes over the gills oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream and carbon dioxide is passed out

Fish secrete a slime like substance from their skin, this provides a protective defence against parasites and infections, it also helps to streamline them through the water enabling them to go faster

Usually male and females of the same species are a different color or have a different body shape

Some species stay together in a packed group called a school of fish, others are isolated and only assemble to feed or spawn

The Flying fish can be found in all oceans, particularly warm tropical waters. Flying fish do not have wings but long pectoral fins which enable them to fly a distance of approximately 50 meters!

Different species of fish include;  Angel, Bass, Beta, Carp, Catfish, Clown, Discus, Goldfish, Grouper, Koi, Parrot, Perch, Piranha, Rainbow, Rockfish, Salmon, Star and Tuna

Fun Fact 15

Most Salmon species are anadromous, this means that they travel back to their birthplace to spawn (reproduce). They navigate their way using tides, currents of the water, the gravity force of the moon and their sense of smell. The salmon's ability to smell is far superior to the smelling senses of a dog!
