Fun Fact 1

Jellyfish or Jellies are creatures that have no blood, brain or nervous system, they are made up of over 90% water

Fun Fact 2

They live in every ocean on the planet and can sometimes inhabit freshwater. Different species vary in color they can be white, pink, yellow, orange, red, blue, green or multi-colored

Fun Fact 3

Jellyfish are not fish! To save confusion they are now often referred to as 'Jellies

What do they eat? They are carnivorous and mainly eat plankton, crustaceans, fish eggs, tiny fish and other jellyfish

They hunt for food and use their long tentacles to sweep food towards the mouth.

The mouth of a jellyfish is underneath the dome or bell-shaped main body area it is surrounded by tentacles

Did you know? Jellyfish are oldest multi-organ animal on the planet! They existed at least 500 million years ago

They swim by contracting and expanding (pulsating) their bodies, the amount of distance they travel is dependent on the tides and currents of the water

Jelly fish (Jellies) have tentacles which are filled with toxins, generally they do not purposely attack humans; however if you should have any contact with the tentacles of a jelly fish you will get stung; this can cause paralysis and on rare occasions, death

If someone is stung by a Jellyfish you should pour vinegar over the wound as soon as possible, and seek medical assistance

The life span varies depending on the species; some small types can live for just a few hours and ones in captivity can live several years. Most wild ocean jellyfish that live by the coast have a life span of 2 - 6 months

A group of jellyfish are called a bloom, a swarm or a smack

The largest of the species is the Lion's Mane jellyfish. In the 1870's a Lion's Mane jellyfish was washed ashore in America, the body alone measured 7 ft 6 inches (2.3 meters) and the tentacles a further 120 ft (36.5 meters)! Arguably it could be considered as the longest animal in the world

The most commonly kept species is the Moon Jellyfish, also known as moon jellies or saucer jellyfish. If you have seen jellies in an aquarium or zoo it is likely to be a specimen of the Moon Jellyfish species

Why are jellyfish kept in round aquariums? Round aquariums prevent them from getting stuck in the corners!
