Edward Regan Murphy, for short Eddie, was born on the 3rd April 1961 in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Eddie Murphy was married to Nicole Mitchell, they had 5 children together - Bria, Shayne, Myles, Zola and Bella. Eddie has two other children from previous relationships - Christian and Eric.

Eddie Murphy dated Melanie Brown from the hit band The Spice Girls from 2006-2007, they have one daughter together Angel Iris Murphy Brown.

Eddie's mother was a telephone operator and his father was a transit police officer. His father died when Eddie was very young so he was raised by his mother and stepfather. His mother became very ill, so for a year Eddie and his brother Charlie Murphy went to live in foster care in Roosevelt, New York.

Whilst Eddie was in care, he developed his sense of humor. He started to write and perform his own material by the age of 15. Eddie later said that Bill Crosby influenced him a lot in early life.

During the 1980's Eddie Murphy was one of the regular comedian appearing on Saturday Night Live, he was famous for doing a voice of a dog, Buckwheat, a character from the Little Rascals.

In 1982 Eddie Murphy appeared in his first movie "48 hrs". He went onto star in movies "Trading Places", "Coming to America" and "Beverley Hills Cop", these movies all become worldwide sensations. Other films followed including "The Nutty Professor" "Norbit and "The Klumps"

Murphy has also appeared in a lot of children's movies, he narrates for characters. His most famous ones are Shrek, Mulan and Dr Dolittle.

Eddie Murphy won a Golden Globe in 2007 for the Best Supporting Actor in Dreamgirls. He also won the "Favourite Voice" award for his character Donkey in the Shrek films in 2008 and 2011.

He used to perfect his impressions by watching the television and copying characters, for example Bugs Bunny and Sylvester the cat.

During his Youth, in 1976, Eddie Murphy entered a talent show at Roosevelt Junior Senior High School, he did impressions of the soul signer Al Green and it was an instant success.

To catch up on his studies, Eddie had to attend night school and summer school to double up on his work to ensure he completed the terms due to being so busy after school performing in local bars.

Eddie Murphy believes in living life in a very clean way so he does not smoke or drink alcohol.

After completing High School Murphy performed at the Comic Strip in Manhattan, he was watched by the clubs owner Robert Wachs, Robert later became Eddie's manager.

As well as being an actor, Eddie Murphy also used to be a singer. One of his earliest recordings was a backing vocal to The Bus Boys song in Trading Places, more recently he sang Ricky Martin's Livin La Vida Loca in Shrek as the character Donkey.
