Did You Know?
Did you know that we have only been aware of Global warming since the mid 20th century? Did you know that Global warming also affects creatures that live in the oceans? As water temperature changes ecosystems and living creatures are being affected, and sea levels are rising which means coastlines are more likely to experience floods. Fun Facts on Global Warming for kids

Fun Fact 1

What is Global warming? Definition of Global warming: The rising of the regular temperature of Earth's atmosphere and climate system

Fun Fact 2

Global warming, and the consequent changes in worldwide climate, is an environmental crisis with major significance. As global warming increases temperature changes across the globe will alter, resulting in a change to weather patterns and agricultural production

Fun Fact 3

What causes Global Warming? The increase in burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil and natural gas lead to an increase of greenhouse gases these causes the Earth's temperature to rise. Deforestation and the destruction of rainforests have added to the continuing crisis of global warming

Fun Fact 4

What are greenhouse gasses? Are natural gases, many are made from human pollution and waste. Greenhouse gasses can consist of: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons (better known as CFCs)

Fun Fact 5

What activities produce greenhouse gases? Greenhouse gases are produced through activities including: the burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil, petrol and natural gas and animal waste (releases methane gasses). The destruction of rainforests, jungles and woodlands also contributes to the rise in greenhouse gas omissions and global warming

Fun Fact 6

So what is actually happening? The sun naturally warms the earth through the atmosphere, and the heat from the earth is reflected back into space. The Earth is surrounded by layers of gas, which help to regulate the temperature of the earth, but if too much greenhouse gas is released the thermal atmosphere becomes to thick and causes a "green house" effect; increasing the climate and retaining too much heat within earths atmosphere

Fun Fact 7

What are Ozone and the Ozone layer? Ozone is a natural gas that is in the lowest atmospheric area to earth (known as the troposphere). The Ozone layer is deteriorating due to pollution, including the burning of fossil fuels, industrial emissions, Motor vehicle exhausts, and the release of chemical solvents

Fun Fact 8

Why is the Ozone important? The ozone layer protects all living things on Earth from ultraviolet (UV) rays that are released from the Sun. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are damaging to all humans, animals, and plant life; if the ozone deteriorates all living things will suffer damage and destruction

Fun Fact 9

What are the effects of global warming? The rise in earth's temperature has caused catastrophic effects globally. Effects include; changes in weather conditions that have lead to national disasters (cyclones, earthquakes and tsunamis), the melting of glaciers and the destruction of the Arctic region, across the globe major loss of vegetation and wildlife have also been affected by global warming

Fun Fact 10

When did global warming begin? Global warming was noted during the middle of the 20th century the average temperature of Earth's near-surface atmosphere and has been increasing, along with its oceans

Fun Fact 11

What is The Kyoto Protocol? It is an international framework and agreement on Climate Change set up by the United Nations (UNFCCC - United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change); The Kyoto Protocol has set international agreements to collectively fight against global warming

Fun Fact 12

The Kyoto Protocol was collaborated in Kyoto, Japan on 11 December 1997 and came into force on 16 February 2005. Nearly two hundred states signed and approved the Kyoto protocol,  committing agreement  to reducing four greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulphur hexafluoride) and two groups of gases (hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons)

Fun Fact 13

Global warming what will happen? Significant climate changes connected with global warming will drastically alter the environment; areas that typically get rain and snowfall are likely to be drier and hotter; areas will be at greater risk of heat waves, wildfires, water shortage and droughts which could lead to crop failure. Lakes and rivers could dry out, animals and plant life will consequently struggle to survive. In contrast sea levels will rise due to warmer temperatures and the melting glaciers; coastlines are likely to experience floods. Hurricanes and tornadoes are likely to become more frequent too, as they are caused by changes in heat and water evaporation in the atmosphere

Fun Fact 14

People are becoming more aware of future problems caused by global warming, during the last decade many initiatives such as recycling have increased in popularity; in fact, recycling has become a way of life for most people. Solar Energy and Wind Power sources have become popular too because, unlike fossil fuel and nuclear energy they are less harmful to the earth as they produce considerably less toxic pollution

Fun Fact 15

What can we do to about Global warming? There are various ways we can all help; if everybody did their best it could make a huge difference to our planet. We need to be more energy wise and energy efficient at home, recycle as much as possible, consider using alternative energy sources and invest in using efficient, smarter cars or using public transport. We could plant more trees! Trees are an essential part of earths natural atmospheric exchange cycle, however there are not enough of them to counteract the increase in pollution, and there are less of them today than there has ever been due to the destruction of rainforests, jungles, forests and woodlands throughout the world
