Fact Sheet on Hydro Energy
Fun Facts on Hydro Energy for kids

Fun Fact 1

Hydro energy is also referred to as hydro power. The word 'hydro' means water, it is a Greek word.

Fun Fact 2

Hydropower is generated through plants across the world. Canada is one of the largest producers.

Fun Fact 3

Hydro energy is a clean, renewable source which doesn't harm or pollute our planet. Other sources, such as the extraction of oil and gas, and the processes these particular fuels go through, can pollute our atmosphere and sometimes our oceans.

Fun Fact 4

Hydro energy is a cheaper than many other energy sources, which include oil, coal and gas. These types of energies also follow lengthy and expensive processes before they can be used as fuel or turned into other types of power.

Fun Fact 5

Hydro energy is one of the oldest types of power, dating back as far as the Ancient Egyptians where this type of energy was used to grind grain.

Fun Fact 6

Hydro is a renewable form of energy because it isn't going to run out. Water is a source which will always be replenished through the water cycle.

Fun Fact 7

Still, unmoving water has potential energy. Any still object has potential energy. Energy is only released upon movement or motion.

Fun Fact 8

When water flows it has kinetic energy, the greater the volume and flow of water, the more hydro energy it produces.

Fun Fact 9

Hydro energy is converted to electricity when water is processed through a hydropower plant.

Fun Fact 10

Hydropower plants utilize various forms of water to generate (produce) electricity. The water originates from our oceans and rivers. There must be a lot of fast flowing water in order to produce electricity as the flow must have the power to turn a turbine.

Fun Fact 11

Most often, hydro energy is generated through a hydropower plant with the help of a dam. A dam will block and redirect water upon release. The dam stops the water from flowing in its natural direction. It is used to redirect the water through a penstock which is a pipe that leads to a turbine. When the dam releases the water, its flow is so powerful and fast that it turns the turbine, passes through it and comes out on the other side of the dam where it returns to its original source (i.e. river).

Fun Fact 12

Electricity is generated (produced) when the force of water (hydroenergy) travels through a turbine

Fun Fact 13

Electricity produced by a turbine at a hydropower plant can be used in many different ways such as powering homes, businesses and power lines.

Fun Fact 14

Dams provide a very good way of blocking water so that it can be diverted and released with enough speed and force to turn a turbine. However, there are some natural flows of water which are able to do the same thing on their own. This can include a strong natural river current, powerful ocean waves and tides, or the power of a waterfall, i.e. the Niagara Falls.

Fun Fact 15

A large amount (volume) of moving water is required to produce electricity. At a hydro plant, around 18 gallons is needed to produce 1 kWh of electricity.
