Christ the Redeemer is a humungous statue located in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil overlooking the city.

The huge statue of Christ is located at the peak of the Corcovado Mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park. The peak of the mountain is 700 metres high.

Between the years 1931 - 2010, Christ the Redeemer was considered the World's biggest Art Deco statue.

The statue was nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World during the year 2007. It has world wide fame and is regarded as manmade marvel.

The height of the Christ the Redeemer statue is approximately 38 meters tall including its pedestal.

The open arms of the statue are one of the most striking features. The width of the out stretched arms is approximately 28 meters.

The idea of constructing a huge religious monument on top of the Corcovado mountain was suggested by a Catholic priest in the mid 19th Century. The priest was called Pedro Maria Boss.

In 1921, the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro began raising funds for the construction of the statue. It took approximately one year to raise enough money and construction started almost straight away. The Catholics of Brazil were particularly enthusiastic about raising money toward the statue's construction.

Many design ideas were suggested for the statue including a cross and a statue holding a globe.

The design which was eventually chosen came from a Brazilian engineer named Heitor da Silva Costa. The statue was sculptured by a French sculptor called Paul Landowski.
