Fun Fact 1

Petra is a fabulous historical site which became one of the New Wonders of the World in 2007. Because of the beautiful red rock which forms the city, it is sometimes referred to as 'The Rose City'.

The ancient city of Petra is situated in Wadi Musa, Petra, Ma'an in Jordan; located on the crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia.

Petra is an ancient archaeological site steeped in centuries of history, styles and designs from various nations including the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians - all of whom have left their legacy within the walls of Petra.

Archeologists are fascinated by this stunning New Wonder of the World which was a central part to the trade routes of the ancient world (the ancient world refers to the region around the Mediterranean and the Near East).

Throughout history, millions of people have passed through the city of Petra and witnessed its magnificence. It is a huge attraction which brings in a great amount of tourism year after year.

There are magnificent buildings constructed and carved from red rock at the historical city of Petra. Some of the fabulous structures include churches, monuments, tombs, galleries and sacrificial alters.

The fabulous old buildings are carved into the steep red rocky walls at the side of one of Jordan's Mount Hor's valleys. The structures are huge and stunning; they can only be accessed via a narrow gorge.

The city of Petra is not solely famous for its spectacular buildings but also for its water conduit system. This area of Jordan can experience flooding but the waters are controlled by the system and measures have been put in place to effectively store water during long periods of drought.

By the 6th Century BC, a desert tribe known as the Nabataeans controlled the area. They didn't leave any written records but it is believed that the Nabataeans featured hugely in the history and development of Petra.

The Nabataeans developed the water conduit system, dams and reservoirs by skillfully collecting and preserving stores of water. This is partly why the city of Petra became a stopping point for merchants and traders as it provided a desert oasis.

During historical times, the walls of Petra would have provided a safe haven for its inhabitants as the steep cliffs helped to defend them from attackers and the stream provided a source of water.

The city thrived well for many years and its residents continued to construct fabulous buildings etched into the red rock of the valley. This success continued until the 4th Century AD when traders started to travel more by sea.

Many buildings were destroyed and the water conduit system was damaged during an earthquake which occurred in 383AD. This didn't help the city's prosperity so slowly the inhabitants started to leave and Petra gradually ceased to become a visiting point for merchants.

In 1812, the city of Petra was rediscovered by the Europeans. Until this point, it had remained unknown to the Western World. A Swiss explorer by the name of Johann Ludwig Burckhardt described the archaeological site as 'a rose-red city half as old as time.'

Petra is still a huge tourist attraction today; it is visited every year by people from all over the world. This famous ancient archaeological city in Jordan has featured in various documentaries and movies including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
