Fun Fact 1

The Victoria Falls are located in South Africa at the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Fun Fact 2

The Victoria Falls is a spectacular system of waterfalls which are known as Mosi-oa-Tunya which means 'smoke that thunders'. This name represents the giant vapor cloud which rises 400 meters into the air.

The Victoria Falls is not the highest or widest waterfall in the world; however, it is the longest, unbroken waterfall of water on Earth. The water drops to the measure of 108 meters!

Fun Fact 4

When compared to other famous waterfalls, the Victoria Falls is around two times wider then the Horseshoe Falls and three times higher than the Niagara Falls.

The Victoria Falls form part of the Zambezi River in Africa. The river cascades spectacularly between the Zimbabwe and Zambia borders.

The Victoria Falls are very wide measuring up to 1,708 meters across, producing a vapor cloud which rises up from the gorge to around 400 meters.

The vapor cloud is formed by the rising spray from the tumbling water and can be seen from up to 50 kilometres away! From such a distance, the vapor does in fact look like clouds of smoke opposed to droplets of water.

The Victoria Falls were created by fracture which occurred naturally in the basalt rock which lies under the area. This fracture caused a great crack in the Earth.

This crack in the Earth has formed the awe inspiring Victoria Falls. The rock continues to erode as masses of water fall over the edge. The crack measures 108 meters deeps in some places.

The Victoria Falls provides one of the most incredible sights, particularly as its vapor creates rainbows which are not only visible during the day, but also during night time hours when a full moon occurs! This is a spectacular and rare sight to witness. Night time rainbows are also known as moonbows!

The waterfalls have formed over many years and more will form in the future as the rocks erode and waters cascade, falling to the gorge, hitting and joining the river below.

David Livingstone was the first European to witness the breath-taking waters of the Victoria Falls. He arrived at the falls in 1855 by canoe.

The name of the waterfalls derived from the European explorer, David Livingstone, who named them 'Victoria' after the British Queen.

The Victoria Falls attract visitors from across the world. It is possible to swim at the edge of the falls during certain times of the year. There is a natural wall of stone at the edge which prevents swimmers from cascading over.

The appearance of the falls differs depending on the amount of water falling over the edge. When there is less water, individual streams of water form and fall from the lip of the waterfall
