Fun Facts on West Virginia for kids | | Fun Fact 1 | Until 1861 West Virginia was part of the State of Virginia. The name Virginia originated as a tribute to English Queen Elizabeth I, she was also known as the "Virgin Queen" as she was never married. For more information on the State of Virginia click here |
| Fun Fact 2 | The state flag consists of a field of white surrounded with a blue border, the state coat of arms is displayed centrally. The state coat of arms depicts a framer and a miner either side of a rock that displays the date June 20 1863 (the date the state divided from Virginia and joined the U.S. constitution). In front of the rock lie two rifles and a red cap, also known as the cap of liberty, symbolizing freedom. Below the image is a red banner displaying the state motto, the image is surrounded in a wreath of the state flower. The white of the flag represents purity and the blue border represents the Union - the flag was officially adopted in 1929 |

The Wheeling Convention took place in 1861, the meeting reorganised the territories and consequently split them in two territories. West Virginia became the 35th State to be admitted to the Union, on June 20, 1863 |
